The Dance School
In 2005, Toronto's salsa scene was strongly dominated by the north american styles, the New York and the
L.A. styles of salsa dancing. Albena de Assis had been at the time involved in the scene for quite a few
years and had just left United Saleros, one of the bigger salsa schools in the city at the time, after
being one of their senior instructors teaching exclusively those styles of salsa. But her appetite for
a different style, different roots, had just been awakened. Her travels to Cuba the previous year and
on that year, her studying of Afro-Cuban and Cuban Cabaret, together with her previous experience in ballet
and the Cuban school of modern dance, served as catalyzers for a new vision: to create and promote a Cuban
salsa scene in Toronto, increasing awareness of the cultural roots of Cuban dance.
Stablishing AfroLatino Dance Company that same year, with the indispensable collaboration from Cuban teacher,
choreographer and dancer Sarita Leyva, this new vision would be put to work. The dance company was both
engaged in the production of high quality Cuban Cabaret shows, as well as the hard task of creating a new dance
school in town.
Thus in 2005, Albena stablished Toronto’s first large scale dance school entirely dedicated to
teaching and promotion of Cuban Salsa, Brazilian Samba, Afro-Cuban and other Latin dances in their authentic
forms. Since then the school has been growing steadily and has become the city’s centre to learning Cuban
style salsa, Casino Rueda, and other Latin dances.
During this time, the school has also been very active in promoting cultural events in the city often,
collaborating with Okokan Productions,
Toronto's foremost promoters of Cuban music shows. We have organized several dance workshops with renowed
masters from Cuba such as:
- Adrian Limonta from Ballet Folklórico Cutumba, Santiago de Cuba
- Félix "Pupy" Insua
- Yoruba Andabo, Havana, Cuba
- Compañía Folklórica Ban-Ra-Rá, Havana, Cuba
- Ana Machado
Albena's interest is not restricted to the Cuban music and dance. Having being raised in Angola, she has a strong affinity
towards the Brazilian culture, more specifically Samba, their most well-known dance form. This interest grew stronger when
she started participating in shows and collaborating with some of the strongest Brazilian dance groups in the city,
such as Escola de Samba de Toronto, Brazil Nativa, and Samba Explosion. Adding Brazilian Samba to the
repertoire of the company and the curriculum of the school was just a natural step. Since then, her Brazilian Samba class
has been growing ever more popular.

Albena de Assis
Albena grew up in Luanda, Angola where, as a child, she started studying ballet and modern dance at the
National School of Dance. She later moved to Portugal to study Computer Engineering but continued her
dance training in ballet with Fernando Lima. After moving to Toronto she started salsa dancing in 2001,
studied with some of the best salsa and afro-cuban instructors in Toronto and taught as senior instructor
for United Salseros for two years. Some of her most influencial teachers are Sarita Leyva (afro-cuban,
cabaret), Ana Machado (afro-cuban), Teddy Olaso (north american style salsa), Yacelis Sanchez
(afro-cuban, cuban folklore), Félix Pupy Insua (afro-cuban), Fernando Lima and Stelio Calagias (ballet).
During that time, Albena was part of Grupo Sabroso as well, performing at various venues
throughout Toronto and at Salsa Congresses in Ottawa, Detroit, and Toronto. She has also
performed with Yoruba Havana, an afro-cuban dance ensemble, and OnBeat Dance Company.
In 2004 she co-founded Latin Dance Theatre, with which she has performed at many festivals
and venues throughout Toronto, expanding her repertoire to Latin Cabaret. 2005 saw her starting
a new venture by forming AfroLatino Dance Company. She has also performed with Samba
Explosion, Escola de Samba de Toronto, and Brazil Nativa, in a variety of Brazilian Samba shows.

Anthony Reyes
Anthony Reyes has always had an itch for salsa but didn’t know where to look. Eventually the itch became a scratch and he began
researching the different types of salsa in Toronto. His curiosity and fascination with salsa led him to AfroLatino Dance
Company. As soon as he took his first steps Anthony was hooked.
The style he felt in love with is Cuban Salsa. Anthony started dancing under the guidance of Albena de Assis for the pass 3
years and continues to do so. Over the years, Anthony has been introduced to other forms of dance, ranging from Ballet, Hiphop,
Rumba and Samba.
Currently assisting and helping teach Cuban salsa classes. You can find Anthony still dancing up storms at local venues
that offer Cuban salsa, Lula Lounge, Six degrees and Babaluu’s (Sundays) just to name a few. Anthony’s love for dance hasn’t
change and only continues to fuel his growth and knowledge of the cuban style.

Shashu Clacken
Shashu is a born and bred Jamaican who settled in Toronto after completing her tertiary studies here. Though a lawyer by trade,
she is a dancer at heart and at every opportunity.
Shashu grew up dancing casually, though intensely, in the vibrant and dynamic Jamaican dancehall culture. Having long been
attracted to the passion-filled, sensual Afro-Latin music and dance culture, in the summer of 2007 she researched the Toronto
salsa scene and found exactly what she was looking for at AfroLatino Dance Company. Shashu became immediately addicted to
Cuban salsa and over time has also developed an affinity for the even more organic and soul-reaching danceforms of Rumba and
Afro-Cuban movement (dances of the Orishas).
Shashu owes her Afro-Latin dance repertoire (including mainly Cuban salsa, Rumba, Orishas, and Reggaeton, but also elements
of Son, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Merengue, and Bachata) to Albena de Assis, her primary dance teacher of three years. Shashu has
been keen to supplement her dance training with various workshops by well-respected dancers including those from Compañía
Folklórica Ban-Ra-Rá (Havana, Cuba), Ana Machado, Félix Pupy Insua (Afro-Cuban) and Consuelo Herrera.
Shashu is now a committed member of the team of teachers at Afro Latino Dance Company, and she derives great satisfaction
from sharing with her students the joy of Afro Latin and Caribbean dances.
